Let’s talk about one of the most misquoted statistics of this year – the infamous "95% of AI initiatives fail.
"Since MIT released its “State of AI in Business 2025” report earlier this year, I’ve encountered a dizzying number of consultants and sales leaders who have sensationalized this statistic, promoting a calculated sense of FOMO and fear-mongering to their clients and to the market. Personally, I think this is dangerously misleading without the proper context.
The factual distinction that matters is simple: The MIT report was specifically focused on Generative AI (GenAI) initiatives, not the entire AI landscape.
The reason for the high failure rate is clear. As detailed in the report, most of the surveyed organizations were stuck, prioritizing small pilots over structural, transformative change.

They were buying static tools that didn’t learn or integrate with existing critical systems, leading to minimal, sometimes meaningless, return.
As strategic advisors and consultants, I believe we have an obligation to build and nurture client trust. That means being data-driven and remaining as informed as we possibly can—understanding the context behind the headlines—and not mischaracterizing material details that could lead our clients to unnecessarily costly, fear-driven decisions.
Let’s be real for a second – it’s clear that the onset adoption of AI in some organizations is resulting in the displacement of many people. But let’s also be clear about the fact that poorly “empowering” decision-makers with misleading information can affect an organization's ability to compete – which results in MORE job displacement.
